STAMFORD, Conn., -- U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said federal policy is helping to expand affordable and market rate housing in Stamford.

On a recent visit to Stamford, Murphy toured the Metro Green III apartment complex, which is currently under construction.

Joining Murphy were Democratic Stamford state Reps. Dan Fox and Terry Adams along with Stamford Mayor David Martin's Chief of Staff Michael Pollard.

"It's federal tax credits that make a lot of this possible. It is federal affordable housing policy that allows us to build stuff like this and we need more of it," Murphy said. "This is exactly what we need. We want market rate housing and affordable housing together.

"This is exactly what we need," he said.

The 11-story apartment building will offer 131 residential units with a mix of studio, one-, and two-bedroom units. More than half of the units — 73 — will be affordable rentals.

Construction began last year and it is expected to be completed next summer.
