Sen. Chris Murphy, one of the most vocal advocates of gun control legislation in Congress, is going to the White House to talk about the issue with aides to President Trump.

The Associated Press reports that Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, isn’t expected to meet with the president himself.

"I'm here to hear the White House out," Murphy told the AP. It is unclear if other lawmakers will also attend the meeting.

Murphy, who was elected to the Senate a month before the Sandy Hook school shootings in 2012, has become an outspoken advocate of stricter regulations on guns, including strengthening laws regarding background checks, banning military-style assault weapons and permitting the federal government to fund research on gun safety.

The White House reached out about a discussion early next week, a Murphy spokesperson said. The details are still being worked out.
