NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - With hurricane season approaching, experts are predicting 2016 will be the worst since 2012.
In 2012, Hurricane Sandy battered Connecticut's coast.
Bill Hutley, of West Haven, isn't used to worrying about these kinds of storms.
"We have thought about it, but haven't done anything to prepare for it. Being from NY this is all kind of new to us, so we're still trying to figure out what we may need to do and take advice from our neighbors," said Hutley.
Local leaders are warning residents to start planning as soon as possible.
"The recommendation is three days of non-perishable food, gallon of water per day, batteries, flashlights, maps," said Senator Richard Blumenthal.
Senator Chris Murphy said keeping trees away from a home is also important.
"You can go out into your yard and make sure your trees are cut back so less likely to disrupt power...have an evacuation plan...know what the route is should a storm bad in a short period of time," said Murphy.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration expects we will see 12 to 17 named Atlantic storms and between five to eight hurricanes.
