WASHINGTON —U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released a statement on Thursday after the Trump administration announced sanctions on Russia for interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

“It’s about time. Russia attacked American democracy in 2016 and until today the Trump administration had responded with a shrug. Let’s hope these sanctions mark a turning point in how the president handles Russia because they’re going to do it all over again this fall,” said Murphy. “The president’s insults of our intelligence agencies’ findings and repetition of Russia’s denials have slowed the U.S. response and put us at increased risk. Vladimir Putin needs to understand we will not tolerate any effort to undermine our elections or public trust in our democracy.”
