WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Tuesday released the following statement on Hong Kong’s arrest of an Apple Daily journalist at the airport:

“It’s clear China is escalating its attacks on democracy in Hong Kong by closing down the last independent newspaper standing and arresting yet another of Apple Daily’s senior journalists. I’m deeply concerned about the abuse of Hong Kong’s national security law to shut down free speech, and call on Chinese authorities to release all journalists unjustly held in detention,” said Murphy.
