WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Friday released the following statement on the National Rifle Association’s declared bankruptcy:

“This bankruptcy filing by the National Rifle Association (NRA) is yet another blatant attempt to shirk the legal consequences of their corruption and self-dealing. The NRA is an organization that exists to juice gun industry profits and line the pockets of their own executives and it doesn’t represent the majority of gun owners,” said Murphy. “For decades, the NRA crafted a political mythology that made it nearly impossible to pass legislation on gun violence, but their grip on Washington is over. It’s a shame the NRA didn’t align with the majority of their gun owners who overwhelmingly support universal background checks, but I look forward to working with the gun violence prevention community and gun owners alike to make universal background checks a reality. With Joe Biden in the White House and Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress, I am more confident than ever that we can pass meaningful legislation that will save lives.”
