WASHINGTON – Ahead of President Trump’s 100th day in office on Saturday, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement.

“Day after day, President Trump breaks the promises he made to the American people. He promised a ‘tremendous’ health care system that would lower costs and cover everyone, but instead tried to pass a bill that would jack up costs and end insurance for 24 million people. He promised to end ‘American carnage,’ but has done nothing to stop gun violence, and instead has rolled back Obama-era regulations that would strengthen the background check system. He promised to ‘hire the best people’ and ‘drain the swamp,’ but he has stacked his administration with either complete novices or people so financially intertwined with their official duties that a new low has been set for ethics in government. He promised to make great deals with other countries, but he fired State Department experts, proposed slashing funding for diplomacy, and has doubled down on a military-first policy that could keep the United States bogged down in the Middle East for years to come.

“Voters sent President Trump to the White House with the expectation that he’d bring their interests as working people to Washington. Instead, he has focused all of his energy on giving more power to his billionaire friends, special interests, polluters, and the nationalist, racist right wing of the country. I remain ready to work with him to create jobs, strengthen Buy American laws, and rebuild Connecticut’s roads, but I have a hard time seeing how he can move significant legislation through Congress unless he changes course and begins to listen to the people.”
