WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, on Tuesday launched a campaign inviting people to share their stories describing how non-compete agreements have negatively affected their career trajectory. Earlier this month, Murphy introduced the Workforce Mobility Act, bipartisan legislation to limit the use of non-compete agreements that negatively impact American workers and our economy. Those who want to share their stories are invited to visit https://www.murphy.senate.gov/noncompetes. Murphy released a video on social media announcing the campaign.

“Non-competes impact Americans in every industry, job, income bracket – you name it. Medical professional, fast food workers, software engineers – the list goes on and on. Non-competes depress worker’s wages, stifle innovation, limit economic growth, and prohibit new businesses from being created,” said Murphy.

In March, Murphy led a bipartisan U.S. Senate letter urging the Government Accountability Office to investigate the use and abuse of non-competes. 40% of American workers have been constrained by a non-compete agreement. These agreements often lack transparency and result in lower wages. Murphy was joined by President of the Connecticut AFL-CIO Sal Luciano and attorney for low-wage workers at the New Haven Legal Assistance Association James Bhandary-Alexander.
